It was after walking through a plate glass door nine years ago, that John Morley, aka Kontrol, started his career, buying decks and a mixer to pass the time whilst recovering from his accident. He learnt the craft of mixing rather quickly, but found it hard to break into the scene, so he started his own club night Elysium, which became the most popular monthly house night in his city.
He was soon picked up by the now closed Heaven Nightclub, where he spent 7 years firmly establishing himself as one of the most promising future figures in Australia, taking on the role as Adelaide's leading DJ, main promoter for the states biggest events and marketing and events coordinator for Heaven.
In the past 7 years he has been awarded up and coming DJ of the year in the South Australian Dance Music Awards, Adelaide's number 1 DJ, runner up most popular DJ 5 times, as well as taking out numerous awards for best promoter, best dance party, best special event, best nightclub over 1000 and best club night 5 times over.
In 2001 he was chosen to attend the Red Bull Music Academy in New York as one of only 3 DJs to represent Australia, with 35 other DJs and producers from around the world, unfortunately though timing was not on his side, and the September 11 tragedy happened only blocks from where the academy was held cutting the trip short.
In the late 90's he was renowned for breaking the kicking Dutch sound
and today he is regarded for his cutting edge house to party style mainstream
grooves, which has earned him bookings alongside Tony De Vit, Warp Brothers,
Tidy Boys, Rachel Auburn, Jeff Mills, Darude, Joey Beltram, 4 Strings, Steve
Hill,
Jon
Langford, Bob Ltd, Lab 4, Roger Sanchez and Judge Jules to name a few.
2004 saw the release of his first production Get Down, engineered by friend Jon Langford, and served up on Midtown's Clubbbox records with two tasty remixes from Dutch madman and friend Bob Ltd.
The second and third tunes in "Brothers & Sisters" and "Friday Night" under the name John Morley were collaborations with Ollie Goedicke ? of the Warp Brother's/D.O.N.S. fame and Frank Sieben.
2005 started with "Standing Up", a tough house bootleg notched up with Melbourne's finest Sgt Slick, which found its way back to French producer Antoine Clamaran, currently awaiting an official re-release.
In July a trip to Europe cemented 2 more tunes, in the form of a disco infused number "Shouting Out" with Goedicke and Sieben combination and "You Gotta Know" a big trance tribute to Cappella with a solid tune and bumpy remix by Bob Ltd.
DJ wise this boy knows his shit and his performance and tricks on the
decks are something to see, but watch this space for more cool releases
in future.
